The Fine Art of Hanging

The Times gives some excellent advice on hanging art, concluding with the following summary:

  • Do take down all artwork when you buy something new, and start afresh
  • Don’t display everything at once: rotating paintings keeps the look fresh
  • Do get the lighting right: it has the same effect as cleaning a painting
  • Don’t put a tiny picture in the middle of a vast space
  • Do choose pictures that harmonise in some way when arranging groups
  • Don't be afraid to play with scale and introduce something oversize
  • Do arrange groupings in crisp geometric shapes: a cross looks great
  • Don't hang works too high. Eye level is the best starting point
  • Do call in the experts if a painting is particularly heavy or valuable
