The Fine Art of Hanging
The Times gives some excellent advice on hanging art, concluding with the following summary:
- Do take down all artwork when you buy something new, and start afresh
- Dont display everything at once: rotating paintings keeps the look fresh
- Do get the lighting right: it has the same effect as cleaning a painting
- Dont put a tiny picture in the middle of a vast space
- Do choose pictures that harmonise in some way when arranging groups
- Don't be afraid to play with scale and introduce something oversize
- Do arrange groupings in crisp geometric shapes: a cross looks great
- Don't hang works too high. Eye level is the best starting point
- Do call in the experts if a painting is particularly heavy or valuable
